MANY of us spend a good deal of their day staring down at their phones, hooked on social media.

And it seems politicians are no different, with two east London Labour MPs coming first and third for most active on Twitter.

The MP for Walthamstow Stella Creasy has racked up an astonishing 69.3 thousand tweets since joining the micro-blogging site in July, 2008.

According to mpsontwitter.co.uk that puts her as the third most active MP on Twitter, narrowly behind the leader of the Liberal Democrats, Tim Farron, who has 70.3 thousand tweets.

But way out ahead is the MP for Ilford North, Wes Streeting, with an astounding 78.4 thousand tweets since joining Twitter in February, 2009.

Not all 650 MPs use Twitter to talk to their constituents however, with the MP for Chingford and Woodford Green, Iain Duncan Smith, recording a grand total of zero tweets.

Ms Creasy said she uses Twitter to interact “as much as possible” with her Walthamstow constituents.

She added: “Online or offline it’s the way we make change happen.

“Whether picking up casework, debating what's happening in parliament or involving them in the campaigns and causes I know are of concern to them, technology makes having these conversations easier.

“Even if sometimes it’s hard to keep up given the high volume of messages I get.”

Mr Streeting said that while the social platform is useful way to share his work as an MP, trolls are “big issue” which needs addressing.

He added: “The often racist or sexist abuse directed at my colleagues like Stella Creasy, Diane Abbott or Luciana Berger is sickening. People need to understand that the law still applies online.”
