The number of NHS-funded boob jobs and sterilisation procedures could be cut in a bid to save £55 million.

The body that buys health services for people in Redbridge is launching an eight-week consultation in an attempt to save money on “non-essential services”.

Redbridge CCG’s Spending NHS Money Wisely survey will ask residents which services it would not mind seeing cut in the hope of saving £55 million over the next financial year.

Healthcare commissioners in the borough are considering making savings on NHS-funded boob jobs, tummy tucks, IVF treatments, male and female sterilisation procedures, and travel vaccinations.

Redbridge CCG’s clinical director Dr Anita Bhatia said: “The care and treatment that we, along with our GP colleagues, provide every day for our patients is funded by taxpayers’ money – your money.

“That’s why we have a duty to spend it wisely, to make sure we get the best value we possibly can for every penny – especially when NHS funding is being severely squeezed and we are seeing more patients with more complex health issues than ever before.”

Redbridge CCG’s Dr Sarah Heyes added: “We haven’t made any decisions yet and we won’t until we have heard from you, but unfortunately, doing nothing is not an option.

“We are family doctors, not politicians, but it’s up to us – with your help – to get the local NHS onto a secure and sustainable footing to ensure that we can maintain those vital local services for you and your families, both now and in the future.”

Redbridge Council’s cabinet member for health and social care Cllr Mark Santos hit out at the Government’s decision to cut local NHS funding.

He said: “The promises made by this Tory Government to protect our NHS do not ring true when we are faced with cuts to local NHS services of this magnitude.

“They need to step up and properly fund our NHS in Redbridge now.”
