REFURBISHMENT works will leave bookworms without a library for nearly three months.

Wanstead Library in Spratt Hall Road will shut its doors for a “thorough refurbishment” on April 14 and could not open again until late June or early July.

Redbridge Council admitted they would have to shut the library in February, but confirmed dates for the closure this week (March 29).

The refurb will mean keen readers will have to travel to Aldersbrook or South Woodford to get their literary fixes.

When the Spratt Hall Road site reopens however, it will be completely redecorated, have new furniture, book shelves, and a brand new floor.

The council said the closure will not affect the ongoing Wanstead parking scheme consultation, as documents will be displayed on waterproof boards outside the building when it shuts up shop.

The library hall will also remain open and available for hire.

Wanstead councillor and cabinet member for civic pride Sheila Bain said: “We know people care deeply about their libraries and of course we’ll endeavour to open Wanstead Library as soon as we can.

“I look forward to these exciting changes and being able to reopen the library once they are complete.”
