A group which campaigned for the return of a popular bus route is celebrating after the service was named the most improved in Waltham Forest.

The number 55, which links Leyton and Oxford Circus, was reintroduced in 1997 after a campaign by Save Our Buses (SOB).

New figures released by TfL show the bus had the most improved reliability of any service in the borough throughout 2016.

Sarah Buck, of SOB, said: "This is great news for passengers using the busy 55 route to pop into town.

"It has good links through Clerkenwell and Holborn and into Oxford Street. The frequent and reliable service means it is just the ticket for more local trips too."

Later this month, SOB will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the reintroduction of the 55 bus, following a successful seven-year campaign backed by thousands of Waltham Forest residents.

The popular service was axed in 1990 due to chronic congestion on Lea Bridge Road, but was restored after bus lanes were installed.

SOB member Pamela Cowan added: "The introduction of bus lanes along Lea Bridge Road paved the way for the return of the 55 in 1997.

"We are delighted that passengers are still enjoying the benefits 20 years later.

"Our campaign had tremendous backing from Waltham Forest residents and it’s good to see that the popular 55 bus continues on the route to success."
