Two homes were partially gutted after a fire ripped through a semi-detached block in Leyton.

Fire crews were called to Lea Bridge road on Saturday afternoon (April 8) at around 2.40pm.

A passer-by saw smoke coming from the first floor of one of the properties and called London Fire Brigade, which took more than 20 calls about the incident.

The blaze gutted the first floor and the roof of one house and part of the first floor and roof of the property next door.

Five people left the first house before firefighters arrived at the scene and no one is thought to have been injured in the incident.

Six fire engines and 35 firefighters from Walthamstow, Barking, Shadwell, Islington, Shoreditch and Homerton stations were attended the site to deal with the blaze.

Following a battle lasting more than three hours, the fire was finally brought under control at 5.43pm.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation, but crews currently believe it was accidental.
