A PRIMARY school has been told it requires improvement after Ofsted inspectors found an inconsistent quality of teaching and schoolboys not performing “well enough”.

The report said the overall effectiveness at Chingford Church of England (CofE) Primary School, in Kings Road, Chingford, ‘requires improvement’ following an inspection in March.

Outcomes for pupils and quality of teaching were areas the school was told it needs to improve, while it did achieve ‘good’ in three other categories.

The report said: “Pupils, especially the boys, do not make enough progress with their writing.

"The presentation of work is variable and often includes spelling mistakes.”

Chingford CofE is a larger than average primary school with 409 pupils, having formed when its infant and junior schools combined in April, 2014.

While writing provisions need improving, inspectors found pupils making good progress in learning to read.

By the end of Year 6 attainment is above the national average in reading and mathematics.

Inspectors found pupils with special education needs making “variable progress” and the most able pupils not progressing “quickly enough”.

The report said: “The most able pupils do not always make progress quickly enough because they often repeat work they have already mastered.

“Most-able pupils have too few opportunities to apply what they have learned in various ways so that they learn at greater depth.”

The report praised the pupils for their “good behaviour” and for understanding the “importance of caring for others”.

Inspectors said the school’s leaders and governors have managed the combination of the infant and junior schools well.

The report said: “They have a clear vision for the future and are doing the right things to improve teaching and pupils’ outcomes.”

Chingford CofE has been contacted for a response.
