NEIGHBOURS in a quiet cul-de-sac have slammed the council’s plans to introduce double yellow lines which they say will leave them with nowhere to park.

The plans for Ive Farm Close off Church Road in Leyton will be rolled out next week but residents say Waltham Forest Council is not taking their views into consideration.

Marcella Kaikai, 62, has lived in the road for over 30 years.

The blue badge holder said she will be forced to park in a nearby street and walk home aided by a crutch.

She said: “It is unacceptable. I won’t have anywhere to park. I can’t park in front of my house because it gets flooded so I have to park on the street and now I won’t be able to any longer.

“I have problems with my foot and it will affect my health.

“The council haven’t spoken to any of us about this. Last December we all wrote to them telling them we don’t need double yellow lines.

“Some houses have five or six cars so where are they all going to park?”

The plans were first proposed by Waltham Forest Council two years ago but after opposition from residents they were dropped.

Last October neighbours received notice that the plans were again on the table so they banded together to fight them.

In January more than 30 people living in the street with 40 houses signed a petition opposing double yellow lines.

Jasmin Allen, who organised the petition, said: “We live in a nice cul-de-sac and it is mostly residents who park there.

“The only time it gets busy is when parents drop their kids off at the mosque nearby.

“It’s ridiculous to be putting in double yellow lines and there’s no legitimate reason for doing it. Parking here is absolutely fine.

“It’s a democracy and clearly more people are against it than for it.”

Cllr Clyde Loakes, deputy leader and cabinet member for environment said residents were informed about the plans last November. He said there will still be enough space for drivers to park on the street.

He said: “We understand that residents had concerns about the introduction of double-yellow lines, and we have considered the points raised in their petition, but we have a duty to ensure that the adopted road layout meets the required safety standards.

“At the moment, there is a substantial amount of obstructive and unlawful parking in Ive Farm Close, which prevents the safe access of emergency service vehicles, makes the road unsafe for pedestrians and limits visibility at junctions.

“The introduction of double-yellow lines is the only option that will keep section of the street clear while ensuring that visibility is maintained.”
