A “QUIET” neighbourhood is in “shock” after a driver smashed into several parked cars along a residential road.

At about 2am on Wednesday (April 12) a white Ford Focus careered into five cars along Brettenham Road, in Walthamstow, after failing to stop for police.

Residents were woken by a “big bang” and came out of their homes to find a scene of carnage on their usually quiet road.

Shortly before, officers in a marked car tried to pull the white Ford over in Pennant Terrace, Walthamstow, but the driver did not stop.

Scotland Yard said they did not pursue the car, which later crashed after navigating a narrow corner in Brettenham Road.

Witnesses said police arrived moments after the crash, with officers arresting the suspected 25-year-old driver on suspicion of aggravated taking and driving away, failing to stop, dangerous driving, driving not in accordance and no insurance.

He was taken to hospital as a precaution and has since been discharged into police custody where he remains.

In the crash’s aftermath, neighbours and owners of totalled parked cars have told of their early morning shock.

Mother, Elizabeth Choppin, who lives nearby, said everyone was in "shock".

She said: “We saw the car right before the police came. It was a total disaster zone, all the cars along here were completely demolished.

“I still think it is incredible how the person managed it, they must have been going at some speed.

“It’s really sad about our neighbour’s car, what are the odds.

“People do bomb down here, it was lucky no one was hurt or got killed.

“We do hear racing happening around here a lot.”

A week later, Marlon Guildford, is still waiting for a lorry to pick up his smashed Fiat Punto.

He said: “I just couldn’t believe it, we heard a bang and came down the stairs as soon as it happened.

“The police were already at the corner as we came out.

“Most people who owned the cars came out and it became a big clean up.

“I don’t know what we can put on here to make people slow down, it’s the first time something like this has happened in the 8 years I’ve lived here.”

Nursery worker, Marcella Blind, was less surprised to see the chaos the next morning.

She said: “I heard a big bang. Normally there is always something happening on this road so I didn’t pay attention to it.

“It’s a quiet road but in the night it can busy, and I can hear the helicopters going over heard.”

Officers from Waltham Forest are investigating the crash.
