A FATHER-OF-TWO who wrote a book about paying off his mortgage in seven years has appeared in a reality TV show.

Orall Cornelius, 46, and his wife Carla, 43, of Walthamstow, featured in the latest episode of Channel 4’s How To Be Mortgage Free on Wednesday, April 19.

Mr Cornelius wrote and published his book Murder Your Mortgage in Seven Years in 2015.

The couple bought their three-bedroom semi-detached home in 2006 for £233,000 with the help of a £210,000 mortgage.

By regularly overpaying their loan by up to £3,000 a month, they managed to save themselves £150,000 in interest.

Mr Cornelius said: “I don’t like to overpay for anything and the financial crash in 2000 created a lot of uncertainty. I just wanted financial security and had other things that I wanted to do with my life.

“I wasn’t going to write the book at first but then my friend said to me what you did was amazing and you need to write about it. She said it would be very helpful to people.

“One of the things that is a must is online shopping. It means you don’t waste money on driving into town and buying something you already have at home.

“You can have a set budget online and see everything in your basket.

“I haven’t been with the same phone company for more than a year because I keep changing to get a better deal. People should look for the best deal for their car insurance and their broadband provider.”

The couple who have two daughters aged 10 and 12 buy supermarket own-brand products, switch off lights when leaving a room and even weigh their food portions.

Mr Cornelius’ book has received glowing reviews on Amazon with readers praising his “concise” and “inspirational” account.

The author, who works for a digital agency, is now studying part-time for a master’s degree in psychology at the University of East London in Beckton.

He plans to study for a doctorate in neuroscience after he graduates.

He added: “I really chose to do it for enjoyment. I’m interested in neuroscience and I’d really like to go onto do a PhD and do more research.

“Appearing on the show was my first time on TV and I was very nervous so I had to do a few takes. The children were nervous as well but they are proud of my book.”
