A MOTHER went the extra mile at the London Marathon to help raise money for the hospice looking after epileptic son.

Mel Rinaldi, who lives in Poppleton Road, Leytonstone, was among 17 Haven House marathon runners raising more than £30,000 for the Woodford Green hospice.

For six years Haven House has cared for Mel’s son Kristian, who has Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy where seizures can be non-stop.

Kristian requires round-the-clock care, has no concept of safety and can only communicate by crying, laughing or smiling.

Speaking after her epic feat of stamina, Mel said: “This was my first race after having children and it was hard going, but I’m so glad that I did it.

“Haven House is a lifeline and provides Kristian with such wonderful support.

“It’s great to be able to raise funds so they can help other children with life-limited conditions. It’s just my way of saying thank you.”

Mike Palfreman, Chief Executive of Haven House, said: “Mel and the rest of our marathon runners have raised an incredible amount for our hospice.

“We are so grateful for all of their hard work and they definitely deserve a well-earned rest.”
