A Leytonstone school has been recognised by the government for gaining some of the most-improved GCSE results in the country.

Buxton School is now ranked within the top 100 schools in the UK based on GCSE performance this year and is also the top rated non-selective school in Waltham Forest.

Buxton received a letter last week from schools minister, Nick Gibb MP, congratulating students and staff being in the top five per cent of schools for the exam results nationally.

In the letter addressed to head teacher Kath Wheeler, Mr Gibb said: "I would like to congratulate you, your staff and pupils on the high level of progress your pupils make.

“We want to ensure every child progresses positively throughout their education, whatever their starting point, to broaden their future educational and employment opportunities.

“Thank you for your work in producing such high standards and congratulations again to you and your staff for such hard work and professionalism."

The results were first published in January as part of the government's new benchmark Progress 8 league tables.

Head teacher Mrs Wheeler said: "We are very proud of our students and teachers who have made this wonderful achievement possible.

“We are very pleased that this success has been recognised by the school's minster.

“However, now is not the time to reflect on our success but to push forward to ensure we continue to set high standards for our pupils."
