This great-grandmother is vying to become Britain’s oldest MP in next month’s General Election.

Eighty-seven-year-old Doris Osen is running as an independent candidate for Ilford North in the hope of taking on the political establishment and improving the lives of youngsters up and down the country.

Mrs Osen, of Manor Road, Chigwell, tried her luck in the 2015 elections but only managed to convince 0.2 per cent of the electorate with 87 votes.

The retired teacher has lived in Redbridge for 61 years and wants to “stand up and do something about all the things wrong with our country”.

She said: “There are so many things wrong with the NHS, our education system, and how the elderly are treated.

“I can’t stand by and do nothing.

“I know life isn’t fair, but I believe if you work hard and do your best you should get a good deal.”

The self-confessed socialist says she wants to stop Theresa May regaining power while the Labour Party is in “disarray” to ensure a better future for the next generation.

She said: “I like some of Jeremy Corbyn’s policies, but half of his party are against him.

“And Theresa May hasn’t called this election for the good of the country, she’s done it because she knows these Brexit negotiations are going to be very difficult and she won’t be very popular in 2020.”

Mrs Osen says she is not deterred by her 2015 election result.

She added: “It doesn’t worry me, I knew I wasn’t going to get in. I just wanted more people to take an interest in politics.

“It’s amazing how much people don’t know about what’s happening in their own lives.

“If anyone in the borough wants my help with anything, I’ll be there for them.”

If she gets into Government the pro-Brexit grandma wants to fight privatisation of the NHS and reduce class sizes in schools.

Politics runs in the Osen family.

Her son Adam ran as an independent in Chingford and Woodford Green in 2010 after legally changing his name to “Non Of The Above” in a bold statement against the political elite.

The 57-year-old said: “I still stand by what I did and I’m still fed up with the mainstream.

“The whole system is flawed. Politicians don’t seem to understand the areas they are in charge of.”

Mr Osen, of Woodberry Way, Chingford, believes his mother is a “serious candidate” in the race against Labour’s Wes Streeting, Conservative Lee Scott, and Liberal Democrat Richard Clare.

He added: “She seriously believes this country is being run badly.

“She might not win, but it’s not all about winning, and you never know what might happen.”

Mrs Osen has already handed in her £500 deposit and shelled out over £2,000 for leaflets.

She said: “The other candidates are very nice, hard-working people.

“They’ll do their very best, but I’ll do better than them.”
