DETECTIVES believe two men were “laying in wait” for the 17-year-old boy before knifing him to death in Walthamstow High Street.
The victim was walking along the High Street with a friend at around 11.30pm on Sunday when police believe he was ambushed at the junction with Buxton Road.
DCI Matt Bonner, who is leading the investigation into the murder, said: “During the altercation that followed, the 17-year-old boy was stabbed.
"At this stage we are investigating whether the two suspects left the area on bicycles.”
He was taken by medics to hospital, but he couldn’t be saved and died shortly after.
Officers have been looking at CCTV in the area and are carrying out house to house checks.
Next of kin have been informed, but no formal identification has taken place.
A post-mortem examination will be held in due course.
DCI Bonner added: “If you were in the area last night and saw anything that may help us, or you have information that will assist, please get in touch."
No arrests have been made.
