Parents are set to march later this week in protest of plans that could see education funding in Waltham Forest slashed by £25 million.

The parents will stage demonstrations outside their children’s schools at 3.30pm this Friday (May 26) over government plans to introduce a new funding formula for state schools.

Protesters, who are being backed by the National Union of Teachers (NUT), local head teachers, councillors and MPs, will then march to Walthamstow Town Square.

Before the General Election was announced, the government had planned to introduce a new funding formula for schools, the National Funding Formula (NFF).

While a small number of Waltham Forest schools could be better off under the plans, many are projected to see reduced funding.

Website schoolcuts.org.uk estimates using figures from the Department for Education the borough’s schools could lose £25 million in funding by 2020.

The figure works out at an average of £672 per pupil and is the equivalent of losing more than 670 teachers across Waltham Forest as a whole.

Steve White, secretary of Waltham Forest NUT, said: "Already head teachers are saying that they cannot cope with the current levels of funding.

“This is a situation that will only get worse if the previous Government’s National Funding Formula is implemented.

"Parents and children in Waltham Forest deserve better and our politicians should be standing with us in demanding investment in our schools."
