A MAN has been charged with stealing a car in which a child was sitting in the backseat.

Beatrice Felicia, six, was in her dad’s Volkswagen Passat at Jet petrol station in Leyton High Road on Tuesday May 16 when a man jumped in and drove off. Her father had met the man to try and sell his car.

The Met had issued an appeal to find Beatrice and she was found by her grandmother walking along the Leyton High Road just over three hours after she went missing. She was unharmed.

Moazzam Ali, 32, who is homeless, was arrested on Friday May 26 and charged yesterday (Saturday May 27) with theft of a motor vehicle relating to the incident on May 16.

He was also charged with a further seven counts of theft of a motor vehicle on various dates in London.

He appeared at Thames Magistrates' Court on Saturday May 27 and was remanded in custody to appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court on a date to be confirmed.
