Aspiring Bake Off stars are being asked to put their skills into action to raise money for people living with dementia.

Jewish Care is calling on people in Redbridge to bake up a storm for its fifth annual Jewish Bake Day on July 5.

Volunteers can hold bake sales at school, work, or in the community anytime in June or July to help fund the buses that take elderly people in the borough to and from Jewish Care centres throughout the week to stop them feeling lonely.

Judith Gershon’s father Chaz uses the buses to get to Jewish Care’s Dennis Centre in Gants Hill four times a week.

She said: “For the last few years that dad’s had dementia the Dennis Centre has been a lifesaver.

“He even says it himself and tells us ‘I’m so lucky I’ve got the Dennis Centre to go to’ all the time.

“All the staff, volunteers, and care bus drivers are fantastic, and I’m so grateful he’s able to go there each day.”

Jewish Care’s marketing and fundraising director, Woodford Green resident Daniel Carmel-Brown, added: “Jewish Bake Day is a great opportunity for us to come together as a community while raising money for the buses that provide transport for elderly people in Redbridge, some of whom are living with dementia.

“The buses mean hundreds of elderly people who otherwise would be isolated can socialise five days a week.”
