Youngsters with from Waltham Forest College got the chance to try their hand at a variety of water sports at an open day for people with disabilities.

A group from the college, aged between 16 and 24, visited the Lee Valley White Water Centre last week for a special event to have a go at kayaking and white water rafting.

Inspired by the Paralympic Games and supported by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority’s Community Access Fund (CAF), the day enabled people with a wide range of disabilities to get out on the water.

Lecturer Barbara Akkaya said: “Everyone had a fantastic time and while some were a bit nervous, they all decided to have a go and enjoyed themselves.”

Groups at the open day had a chance to take on the 300m-long Olympic course, where Team GB won gold and silver in the London 2012 Canoe Slalom Events.

They also were able to try the 160m “legacy course” and paddle on the park’s flat water lake in kayaks and canoes.

Lee Valley White Water Centre general manager, Paskell Blackwell, said: “The day was a terrific success, with many of those taking part trying out things that they have never done before.

“We believe that everyone should be able to access all our activities and services and this special day showed how challenges like this can benefit a variety of different groups, promoting health and fitness and boosting confidence.”
