Iain Duncan Smith suffered an unfortunate "Freudian slip" while speaking live on BBC Breakfast.

The MP for Chingford and Woodford Green was questioned over the confusion in tax pledges in the Tory manifesto by presenter Naga Munchetty.

She said: “Theresa May has dropped the triple tax lock.

“Why would you take it out only to come back in and say there would be no tax rises? This is very confusing.”

Mr Duncan Smith responded: “What we are trying to get away with in the manifesto - get away from, rather - is the idea that you set out every single thing in detail, saying ‘we won’t do this, we won’t do that’.”

His slip of the tongue did not go unnoticed as observers took to social media to mock the former work and pensions secretary.

Emil Jones tweeted: “Ian Duncan Smith on BBC news just said, 'what we are trying to get away with in our manifesto'.

“Freudian slip of gargantuan proportions.”

Teresa MacKinnon told her followers: “Rewind! Ian Duncan Smith on bbc news ‘what we are trying to get away with..’ how your language gives you away! #GE2017.”
