John Cryer was re-elected as MP for Leyton and Wanstead after being returned with a larger majority.

Mr Cryer saw his majority almost double from 14,919 in 2015 to 22,607 in what was a strong night for Labour in London and England as a whole.

The MP, who has held the seat since 2010, said the country would never be defeated by terror attacks seen in the run-up to the election in London and Manchester.

Speaking after his victory, Mr Cryer said: “I would like to thank my three opponents for conducting such a good campaign.

“We have obviously had some fairly abrasive exchanges during what has been in effect quite a long campaign.

“But what separates us is but a slither compared to what separates us and the people who try to perpetrated the attacks in London and Manchester in the past few weeks and have brought such misery and chaos and suffering.

“We will never be defeated by this sort of act. We will always win because we have faith in democracy.”

An increased turnout helped both the Conservatives’ Laura Farris and Liberal Democrat candidate Ben Sims improve on the number of votes their parties received in 2015.

Green Party candidate, Ashley Gunstock, received 1,351 votes, down from the 2,974 he attracted when he stood in the constituency in 2015.

Mr Cryer added: “Our system of democratic accountability is one of the greatest things about this country and I am immensely proud to be elected for the third time as MP in Leyton and Wanstead.

“It’s a huge privilege and it means the world to me.”
