TWO men who went on the run after escaping from prison have been sentenced.

Matthew Baker, 29, and James Anthony Whitlock, 32, escaped from HMP Pentonville on November 7 2016.

The cellmates had stuffed their beds to make it look like they were asleep and it took staff in the north London jail 15 hours to notice they were gone.

They used cutting tools to saw through a metal bar before making a bid for freedom.

Baker was found hiding at his sister’s house in Ilford.

Whitlock was arrested three days later in Homerton after a manhunt that lasted almost a week.

Baker was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment, to run consecutively with his life term for glassing and stabbing a man in Dagenham in 2015.

Whitlock was sentenced to 24 months on top of his 54 months for conspiracy to burgle.

Both pleaded guilty at Blackfriars Crown Court on Thursday, June 15.

Baker’s girlfriend Chelsea Gibson, 25, of Four Seasons Close in Bow, pleaded guilty to assisting an offender. His sister Kelly Baker, 22, of Friars Close in Ilford, admitted harbouring an escaped prisoner.

Both women will be sentenced at a later date.
