NEW road markings on a busy main road have been branded “drunk” and “ludicrous” by confused drivers.

Both drivers and cyclists using Kings Head Hill, in Chingford, are expressing concern over new road markings.

Kings Head Hill is a steep but busy main road in north Chingford linking Station Road with Sewardstone Road.

Road users have been left scratching their heads over new bicycle signs painted close to the central white line.

With no parking restrictions outside some homes to allow for residents’ cars, drivers and cyclists often navigate into oncoming traffic to get by.

Drivers have also said how the central white lines are also off-centre, which only adds to the confusion.

Driver Anita Caira begged the question: “Were the people that worked on the Kings Head Hill road markings drunk? Just don’t get it, or is it me?”

She added: “All the way down, bike signs all over the road. Centre markings are right over on one side by the new flats near Drysdale avenue junction.

“So with the cars are parked up you are driving right into the lane of oncoming traffic.

“You have to see it, it’s all off centre.”

After driving down Kings Head Hill, Sandra Dibble said similar bicycle signs were removed on other main roads in Chingford.

She said: “They had them in Larkshall Road also, way back, but they have just been erased.

“Just drove up there. It’s just the most ludicrous set of road markings I’ve ever seen.”

Cyclist Ben Roberson said the council should concentrate on better road surfacing instead.

He said: “As a cyclist I don’t get the point of them and would rather money was spent on resurfacing rather than painting pictures of bicycles.”

The council's deputy leader Cllr Clyde Loakes said the improvement works to Kings Head Hill are still in progress and further road markings will be installed shortly.

He added: "These include several sections of double yellow lines to restrict parking.

"The centre line has been deliberately off-set to provide space for vehicles to pass stationary buses using the bus stops.

“Once the remaining road markings are complete and the final layout is in place it will be much clearer for road users.

"We are currently programmed to have the remaining works complete in the next two weeks.”
