A PRIMARY SCHOOL is calling on shoppers to help them bag new equipment for its playground.

Wanstead Church School’s bid for new play facilities is one of three community projects in the area that have been chosen by Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme.

In partnership with charity Groundwork, the initiative give grants of £1,000, £2,000, and £4,000 to different causes using the 5p shoppers pay for their carrier bags at the checkout.

Throughout July and August people shopping at Tesco in Wanstead, Woodford Green, Barkingside, Gants Hill, and Ilford can vote for the project they want to see funded. The one with the most votes will get the most cash.

Wanstead Parent Teacher Association member Yvonne Edwards urged shoppers to consider voting for them.

She said: “The PTA has been working incredibly hard to raise money for new playground equipment, and we’re lucky to be part of such a generous community.

“But in these times of cuts to educational funding, literally every penny counts, so we’re hugely grateful to Tesco for shortlisting us for its scheme.”

Head of community at Tesco Lindsey Crompton added she “can’t wait to see fantastic projects like Wanstead Church School’s come to life” as a result of the initiative.

Bags of Help has already handed out £30 million to help 4,600 different local causes around the country.
