Stella Creasy has claimed tower blocks in Walthamstow are having their cladding investigated amid rising safety concerns.

Concerns around high-rise blocks have swept the nation in the wake of the Grenfell Tower inferno in Kensington over two weeks ago, which is thought to have killed at least 79 people.

The speed at which the fire spread is believed to have been aided by new cladding fitted to the building.

Ms Creasy's revelation on Question Time last night came after the council said no blocks in the borough use the same cladding installed at Grenfell and all high rise homes either have fire risk assessments in place or are currently underway.

The Labour MP told the audience in Hastings: "I'm very mindful tonight. In my community in Walthamstow, there are people in blocks that have cladding that is being investigated."

After Ms Creasy's comments, the local authority confirmed no council-owned blocks were having their cladding investigated.

Ms Creasy's office has been contacted to confirm which buildings are being investigated and if they are privately owned.

Last week, the council confirmed none of its blocks are currently fitted with sprinkler systems.

However, the local authority said it has secured funding from the London Fire Brigade to install sprinklers in three towers used for sheltered accommodation.

More to come.
