CUSTOMERS of a community post office are invited to share their views on its proposed relocation.

The post office in Walthamstow High Street will move to Foster’s Supermarket in Hoe Street if plans are given the go-ahead.

The proposed relocation is part of the Post Office’s plans which were announced in January to close 37 Crown offices across the UK.

Earlier this year members of a post office workers’ union campaigned against the proposed plans saying the relocation would be a “blow” to the community.

The Post Office said it will be possible for staff to transfer their employment but the Communication Workers’ Union said employees would lose their jobs and be replace with less experienced workers.

East London and West Essex Guardian Series:

Members of the Communication Workers Union campaigned outside the post office to fight the proposed plans.

If moved, the post office will be open from 8am to 11pm seven days a week. At the moment the post office is open from 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday, closes at 12.30pm on Saturdays and is closed on Sundays.

The branch will be operated by Sam Balasingam on a franchise basis and the plans include a complete refurbishment of the premises to combine Foster’s Super Market and the vacant unit next door.

Access will be improved with the installation of an automatic door and an internal ramp.

Roger Gale, Post Office Sales and Trade Marketing Director, said that the change would help to ensure the branch is commercially viable into the future and therefore protect Post Office services in Walthamstow.

The Post Office is committed to keeping our services at the heart of communities which we know is hugely important to people,” he said.

“This proposal means we can continue to do that, into the future. We are making sure we take the right action to sustain services for years to come.”

The public consultation will run until August 16. It is proposed the branch would open in November of this year.
