Firefighters were called to tackle a huge blaze, which saw two square miles of field go up in flames.
Crews were called to the incident, in Epping Lane near the M25 junction with Theydon Bois and Abridge Golf Club, at around noon on Friday (July 14).
Essex Fire Service crews worked with the Highways Agency to close off nearby roads and carry out lane closures on the motorway.
Firefighters used a Pinzgauer, a specialist off-road vehicle, to negotiate the terrain and tackle the blaze, which was extinguished by around 12.50pm.
The cause of the fire was recorded as undetermined.
