DOG owners could soon be subject to tougher rules when out and about with their four-legged friends.

People are currently banned from taking their dogs into any council park or playground in Redbridge, including the Ilford War Memorial Gardens in Newbury Park.

But under plans for a new “dog control Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO)”, Redbridge Council wants to extend the ban to Hainault Forest Country Park Farm and any tennis, basketball, or sports court in the borough.

The PSPO would also see fines for breaching the order, letting dogs off their leads, or not cleaning up after them, increase from £80 to £100.

This falls to £50 if paid within 10 days, but could go up to £1,000 if residents fail to cough up and are taken to court.

If approved, the new regulations would also ban dog owners from walking more than six of their pets at the same time.

A public consultation on the proposals is open until August 27.
