A group of young fiddlers has made the long trek down to east London from the Shetland Islands to learn about the capital’s culture and music.

The trip is part of the East Winds Project which has been awarded a Waltham Forest Arts Award.

Six children from the remote islands have been paired up with violinists in Walthamstow and will stay with their families as they prepare for a series of concerts.

East London and West Essex Guardian Series:

Jumping for joy! The students visited the Shetland Islands earlier this year.

Earlier this year the hosting students travelled to the Shetland Islands where they stayed with their counterparts, comparing lifestyles with the common bond of the fiddle.

The students aged between 11 and 14 were selected by performing arts charity Shapeshifter Productions and came from a wide range of social backgrounds.

The project is run in partnership with Waltham Forest Music Services and involves master classes and workshops to help students learn more about south Indian, classical and traditional musics.
