The Wimbledon Championships may be over for another year but the capital’s love for tennis continues with the Special Olympics Greater London Regional Tennis Competition.

Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in Stratford will host the tournament next month in partnership with the Special Olympics of Great Britain and the Tennis Foundation.

Designed to accommodate players of all ages and abilities, the competition is open to anyone with an intellectual disability who is keen to put their skills to the test in a friendly competition.

Jack Pringle, sports development officer at Lee Valley Regional Park Authority said: “We’re really pleased to welcome this Special Olympics event back to Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre this summer for what should be a fun and engaging event for all.

“Alongside hosting top flight events such as the last year’s NEC Wheelchair Masters, it remains a key aim of the authority to stage community level, inclusive competitions across all of its venues for impaired and able bodied players alike.

“Following the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Games, we’ve seen a positive growth in the number of regular visitors attending our disability tennis programmes at the centre which include visually impaired and wheelchair focused sessions.”

The competition will run from 9am to 5pm on Saturday, August 19. Registration will close on Wednesday, August 9.

For the entry fee of £10, players can choose to participate in singles or doubles matches, with a £5 extra charge for those in a second category.

Entry is free for spectators wishing to support players.
