A NEW convoy of travellers have set up shop in a council-owned field behind a supermarket car park.

Rubbish is now strewn across the entrance to the sports field behind Low Hall Sainsbury's, in Walthamstow Avenue, in Chingford.

The new group of about 20 caravans and motorhomes have turned up in the same field as another group last week.

The council confirmed it owned the land and is working with the police to get them removed as soon as possible.

A council spokesman added: "We are reviewing our security measures at all our open spaces and trying different measures to see what can be done to prevent a recurrence.”

More motorhomes and caravans have even taken residence in the supermarket's car park.

Shocked shoppers have even described seeing young children on quadbikes going around the supermarket car park.

It comes after a stint in the field next to Peter May Sports Centre, in Highams Park, forced organisers of a park run to cancel their weekly event.

This is one of many camps set up over the last few weeks in Chingford and Highams Park.
