RECYCLING enthusiasts living in flats could scoop an £800 cash prize for environmentally friendly acts.

Redbridge tenants have been automatically entered into the “Flats Recycling League” which rewards two blocks of flats every three months for the most recycled and biggest improvement.

Winners can splash out on a specific project of their choice. They will also receive an engraved plaque recognising their efforts to improve the environment.

Councillor John Howard, cabinet member for environment and sustainability said: “There is a challenge in getting residents who live in flats to recycle more, but through this league and others we hope to do just that.

“As well as helping the environment, residents will also be in with the chance of using their winnings to do something to benefit their local community. For example host an event or buy sports kits.”

Residents in Althorne Gardens, South Woodford, clinched £500 for recycling the most between January and March. They spent their prize on a weekly fruit and veg home delivery service.

Fellow winners in Raine Gardens voted to receive gardening and composting equipment to help grow their community garden.
