A FATHER feels “sadness, helplessness and anxiety” over fears impatient drivers could wind up killing his baby daughter.

Fahim Rahman, of Granville Road, South Woodford, fears his 18-month-old daughter’s safety could be compromised by congestion and road rage.

The 36-year-old lawyer, who has lived in Granville Road for six years, said he “loves the place and the area” but is troubled by anger generated by the lack of room for drivers to manoeuvre.

He said: “Personally, it makes me sad, helpless and anxious that one day I will be putting my baby daughter into her car seat when, instead of dealing with the now customary honks and occasional verbal abuse, there will be a serious accident involving an impatient vehicle user.

“The problem’s getting worse. Drivers have no regards for cars, health and safety and 20mph speed limit. I don’t let my child out the front door because we’re so close to the road.

"Those who want to drop kids off and get home between 3.30pm and 5.30pm cannot use the road for love nor money. It’s a rat run.”

The road has a number of residents' cars, which all have permits, parked on each side more than other roads - leaving narrow spaces for other cars.

Mr Rahman believes referring to the issue as "congestion" doesn't do justice to the full extent of the problem.

He claims to have also suffered abuse from motorists after his open car door blocked their way down the narrow road.

Last week, he opened his car door which blocked four cars and a man in a white van started shouting abuse at him.

"I can take it because I have thick skin but my wife and child were there and shouldn’t hear it,” he said.

In January 2016, Mr Rahman started a petition with the support of 53 other residents on Granville Road and Councillors Gwyneth Deakins and Lloyd Dudderidge.

Four solutions were suggested - including closing off the road, a solution which was deemed impossible.

He asked for access to be blocked in the morning and a traffic camera to be installed, turning it into a one-way system and scrapping the road to make it look wider, all which were rejected.

Cllr Gwyneth Deakins said: “The highways department are doing a traffic survey there but I haven’t heard the outcome about that. They weren’t very positive about the priorities. It’s dreadful.”

“It’s extremely frustrating and I feel sorry for the residents. I have tried to drive up once or twice myself and even on a Sunday afternoon it’s impossible.
