TRANSPORT for London’s decision to ban Uber from operating in the capital is “courageous”, an MP has claimed.

TfL announced that it will not renew the taxi company’s licence to operate in London after it expires on Saturday, September 30.

Uber’s approach to reporting serious criminal offences and use of a type of software that could block regulatory bodies from gaining full access to the app were two reasons cited by TfL for its decision.

Wes Streeting, MP for Ilford North, hailed TfL for standing up to the company.

"This is a courageous decision by the Mayor and Transport for London, finally drawing a line in the sand to make it clear that no company, however big and powerful, will be allowed to flout our laws and regulations or jeopardise Londoner's safety without facing serious consequences.

Tom Elvidge, general manager of Uber in London, vowed to fight the decision through legal means.
