A popular pub has been forced to close its doors to the public after almost three decades in business.

The Nightingale, in Nightingale Lane, Wanstead, had been run by landlord Noel McMahon since 1987, but announced yesterday it was shutting up shop.

In a statement posted online, staff at the pub said it would close after close to 30 years due to “health reasons”.

The statement said: “To all our friends & loyal customers, over the last 30 years, we would like to say a sincere thank you to every one of you, and deeply regret the drastic action we have had to take.

“Unfortunately, due to health reasons it has brought about our decision for closure.

“Thank you, one and all for all your loyal custom and support. It's been a craic.”

Landlord Mr McMahon had been one of the longest serving landlords in the area before the decision to close the Nightingale.

He had run pubs across Forest Gate and Manor Park, as well as the British Queen in New Wanstead for ten years before taking over The Nightingale in Nightingale Lane 30 years ago.

The pub had run a number of charitable events during his tenure, including raising £4,000 for Haven House Children’s Hospice and the Our Lady of Lourdes church restoration fund.
