A red sun spotted by residents across east London this afternoon is remarkably being caused by Storm Ophelia.

The unusual occurrence has been observed in the capital, with a number of people sharing photos and video online of the phenomenon this afternoon (Monday, October 16).

However, experts say the event has been caused by the incoming Storm Ophelia.

Met Office forecaster, Grahame Madge, said the former hurricane is pulling air and dust up from southern Europe and Africa, which is causing the sun to appear red in colour.

"It's all connected with Ophelia, on the eastern side of the low pressure system air is coming up in the southern direction," he said.

"Air is being pulled from southern Europe and Africa and that air contains a lot of dust.

"So it's most likely the appearance of sunset at midday is caused by the particles scattering the light and giving the appearance of a red sun.

"It's certainly spectacular at the moment and quite a talking point, we've had a lot of calls about it."

Storm Ophelia hit the British Isles this morning and has already caused serious damage to property and claimed the life of at least one person.

It is expected to be one of the largest storms to hit the country in years, with winds of up to 80mph forecast in some areas.

The Met Office has issued Yellow and Amber weather warnings in western parts of the UK, although the storm is expected to miss London.
