Waping Hockey Club's Men's Firsts picked up where they left off last week with a dominant 6-2 victory over Spalding.

Having claimed a resounding 9-2 victory over Ipswich last week, Wapping were once again in free-scoring form against a Spalding side yet to win in the league this term.

Despite the imposing final scoreline, the game started in tentative fashion, with both sides looking to gain a foothold in the match.

Indeed, it was Spalding who took the lead after a penalty corner which was well saved resulted in a penalty stroke being awarded and duly converted.

Wapping responded well to the shock of going behind and hit back to draw level before the half-time break.

The goal came at the ideal time for Wapping and they started the second period with a renewed attacking impetus which saw them score twice in quick succession after the restart.

Now in control of the match, Wapping's greater fitness began to show and they pulled away thanks to a quick-fire brace from Will Cairns, which added to a further goal to take Wapping's tally to six.

Spalding hit back with a consolation strike, but it mattered little in the grand-scheme of things as Wapping saw out the remainder of the game with little concern.

Cairns' strikes were added to by goals for Adam Fallis, Bobby Watson, Grant Aidoo-Nash and Nat Crawley.

It was also a productive weekend for the Ladies Firsts as they overcame a 2-1 win over Cambridge University Firsts in a surprisingly close clash against the league's bottom side.

The Youthful Cambridge side took the game to Wapping and played at a tempo which made for a testing afternoon.

Wapping did, however, start the game in bright fashion and put pressure on Cambridge with some tough tackling.

They soon made their dominance show when Jennifer Allen was found in space on the penalty spot, but saw her initial shot well saved.

Fortunately for Allen, the ball bounced straight back to her and she lifted the rebound back over the prone Cambridge stopper.

Not happy to rest on their laurels, Wapping continued to push forward, but were made to wait until 10 minutes from half-time to double their lead.

When the goal did arrive it was Allen who provided the clinical touch in front of goal with a fine finish.

She got in front of her marker from a low cross and angled her stick to lift the ball over sliding goalkeeper Wapping were now playing with a level of confidence which suggested they would add further goals to their tally, but it was, in fact, Cambridge, who got back into the game with a goal of their own.

Their strike came before half-time after a goalmouth scramble allowed them to breach the solid Wapping defence.

With only a goal separating the two sides, the second half was a cagey one and Wapping repeatedly had to repel Cambridge attacks.

Most of Wapping's better moments going forward came on the counter attack, but they couldn't find a third goal as Cambridge held firm at the back.

They also wasted a number of short corner chances, but it ultimately proved inconsequential and Wapping preserved their 2-1 advantage and secured the win.
