A “VERY real threat” is being posed to a much loved cinema by a company’s plans to sell land.

Sainsbury's has published an investment proposal to sell more than 59,000 square feet of land in South Woodford - including the much-loved Odeon.

Now Cllr Paul Canal, a Conservative Leader and cllr for Bridge Ward, has raised concerns over the plans.

The report states: “The emerging policy position does not afford any direct protection to the Sainsbury’s Supermarket or Odeon Cinema.”

The Guardian approached Redbridge Council for comment but it had nothing to add.

The proposal, called “prime London retail investment”, puts an area including Sainsbury’s foodstore and five high street retail units, including Boots and Lizard Lounge, on the market.

Cllr Canal said: “I think the proposal poses a very real threat to the cinema.

"Clearly they’re not planning to stay there. To lose it would be a backwards step.

“If they sold this site it could involve the demolition of the cinema. Leisure-wise, it’s the only thing to do if you are under 18 in the area.

"It would be a massive loss- the elderly like going there. It would leave a massive hole in the community.

“In any area, you need a mix of offerings. The council should do all it can to preserve it for future generations.”

Cllr Canal is now considering looking into listing the cinema as an asset of community value.

However, despite the  report, Sainsbury’s vowed that the proposal was for a change of landlord. It insisted it would be staying in the area.

A spokesman for Sainsbury’s said: “Our South Woodford store is incredibly popular and will continue to serve customers.”

A spokesman for Odeon confirmed there are no plans to close the site, where a cinema has stood since 1934.

They added: “We’re very proud of our fantastic cinema in South Woodford and look forward to continuing to provide great service and all the latest and best entertainment for years to come."

Sainsbury’s sublets the cinema and five high street shops, benefiting from all generated income.
