TWO-THIRDS of adults in Redbridge are overweight or obese.

Redbridge Council is cracking down on obesity rates in the borough, which also affects two in five 10 and 11-year-olds.

Consumption of foods high in sugar, salt and fat has been blamed for obesity rates among adults and children.

The council has signed up to the Good Food for London programme which will see them tackle advertising and sponsorship, reducing the prominence of sugary drinks and promoting free drinking water.

Councillor Elaine Norman, cabinet member for children and young people said “I am delighted to have represented Redbridge at the Good Food for London report launch.

“We decided to sign the declaration as part of our commitment to ensure children have the best start in life and that all residents have greater access to healthy food and drink.

“We want to make sure that Redbridge continues to be an excellent place to bring up a family.”
