A vet has warned animal lovers their pets are facing two months of “firework fear” as Diwali celebrations begin today.

Hermann Heyl, clinical director at The Vet in Highams Park, said the approaching firework season, including Bonfire Night, can cause severe stress to animals such as dogs, cats and rabbits.

The Hindu festival of light, November 5 and New Year’s Eve are three of a handful of days where rockets, bangers and roman candles are legally allowed to be let off after 11pm in the UK.

Mr Heyl said: “Although this can be a very colourful and exciting time of year for people with firework displays and bonfires, it can be quite a stressful time for our four-legged companions.

“Fireworks emit light and sound in a spectacular way which can be visually stimulating for people but genuinely terrifying for our pets as they have much more sensitive eyes and ears.

“If your pet is likely to be anxious or apprehensive, coming up to this annual event, the best thing you can do is plan ahead.”

Mr Heyl advised pet owners they can minimise stress to animals by locking cats indoors and walking dogs during daylight hours to tire them out.

The vet also said windows and curtains should be closed to reduce noise and light flashes.

He added: “There are positive ways in which we can help to minimise the distress caused to our pets by fireworks.

“If you have any questions about looking after your pet at this time of year, and preparing them for firework fear, call into your nearest The Vet for advice.”
