REDBRIDGE Council has vowed to protect “the character” of South Woodford following threats to a much loved cinema.

Sainsbury’s put more than 59,000 square feet of land, including the Odeon, Lizard Lounge and Boots, up for sale in an investment portfolio.

The report states: “The emerging policy position does not afford any direct protection to the Sainsbury’s supermarket or Odeon cinema.”

Councillor Helen Coomb, cabinet member for regeneration, property and planning said the council will maintain the area’s appeal.

She said: “South Woodford is designated as a district centre and town centre policies make it very clear that the council will protect the role and character of the centre so as to maintain it as a vibrant, diverse and busy centre with a strong daytime and evening economy.

“Any development proposal coming forward on sites within the town centre would have to be retail led mixed-use and demonstrate how they comply with policies, ensuring there is a complementary retail, leisure, office and evening culture offer.”

No offer has yet been made but any submitted must compliment council policy.

Cllr Coomb said: “We are aware of the current marketing activity in respect of the site but have not been approached by any parties seeking advice on redevelopment.

“Should we receive any development proposals they will be treated like any other and considered against policies in our Local Plan.

A spokesman for Sainsbury’s said that the proposal was for a change of landlord, while an Odeon spokesman said there were no plans to close the site.

The cinema opened in 1934.
