Europe’s largest urban wetlands opened to the public earlier this month offering families the chance to visit ‘London’s best kept secret’.
MP for Chingford and Woodford Green is the latest visitor to tour the 211 hectare site which underwent a £10.6 million regeneration project.
The transformation was made possible by funding from the Heritage Lottery, Waltham Forest Council and Thames Water and includes a 2km cycle path through the site.
For the first time in 150 years families can visit the wetlands brimming with wildlife and enjoy angling, birdwatching and relax in the café and visitors’ centre.
Mr Duncan-Smith said: “Few locals know about Walthamstow Wetlands in north London.
“But now they, and nature lovers everywhere, can enjoy this amazing bird reserve for free.
“The project has only been possible due to the commitment of all the partners involved and generosity of the Heritage Lottery Fund.
“The wildlife conservation and industrial value of Walthamstow Wetlands is truly unique in London and the opening of the site now allows more people to access its natural and architectural heritage”
