I sometimes wonder if people actually know what a local councillor does.

Over the last seven years I have dealt with all sorts of issues; failed streetlights, getting trees pruned, removed or replaced, fly-tipping, persistent anti-social behaviour, parking, issues with neighbours, residents' complaints against the council, chasing housing associations on behalf of their tenants, lost dogs and more.

I have also dealt with some very serious matters after crimes have been committed, or where residents have suffered harassment, or where they have had mental health difficulties. Councillors are contactable night and day and we try to help wherever we can.

Sometimes you can't solve everything, but when you do achieve something, however small, it is such a great feeling to see people getting a resolution to their problems. To me this is why being a councillor is so rewarding and so important. Every little win is a win for our whole community.

I have also worked hard to deliver things for Highams Park. I helped start the local farmers market, started a chair yoga class for our less able and older residents and secured funding from the council for a pedestrian crossing which improved access for the blind and disabled workers employed by Clarity.

I was also pleased to be part of the Conservative group on the council when we challenged plans to take away the 15 minutes' free parking and to close and relocate Hale End Library. The administration needs to be challenged and it was great to see those campaigns taken up by local residents and, in both cases, the council persuaded to change their minds.

What is it like being a local councillor? Hard work, but great fun!
