A TEENAGER dubbed “a role model” scooped a Jack Petchey Foundation Achievement Award after being nominated by his scouting peers and leaders.

Muhammad Islam, 16, was one of more than 100 scouts from north east London groups to win the award on Thursday, November 9.

He joined 7th Goodmayes Scouts as a volunteer two years ago and became “a role model to the other scouts.”

The 16-year-old successfully completed a 40km trekking expedition for his Duke of Edinburgh bronze award and will soon volunteer with the Cubs for the scheme.

Over the past two years Muhammad has also completed two sponsored cycle rides for charity.

Sir Jack Petchey CBE, 92, said: “I am passionate about our awards scheme which enables young people to be recognised, valued and rewarded for their achievements and positive contributions to society.”

Each winner received medallions to go with their framed certificates and a £250 cheque.

Muhammad spent his £250 on new camping equipment.

A total of 107 scouts from groups across north east London were honoured at Sir James Hawkey Hall, Woodford Green.

Sir Jack founded the Jack Petchey Foundation in 1999 to recognise the positive contributions young people make to society and to support them in achieving their potential.
