Descendants of a First World War hero killed in battle will speak at a commemorative ceremony in his memory.

John Arthur Grimley and his son Steve will be special guests at an event organised by the east London branch of the Western Front Association on Wednesday November 22.

John and Steve are the grandson and great-grandson of Private Arthur Grimley who was killed in the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917 and was laid to rest in Queen’s Road Cemetery in Walthamstow.

The men were traced by Mark Carroll of the Walthamstow Family History Society as part of the Passchendaele at Home Project to mark 100 years since the battle.

Private Sidney Victor Freeburgh and Private Alfred Pledger who died in the battle and are buried nearby will also be remembered at the ceremony.

The event will start at 11.30am and wreaths will be laid on the graves and trees planted nearby.

Major Jeremy Fern, Deputy Lieutenant for London, the Mayor of Waltham Forest,  representatives of the Royal British Legion and the Western Front Association are expected to attend.
