The lucky winner of a competition judged by a celebrity photographer has won flights to the exotic island of Madeira.

Beverley Springer’s photograph of her son standing in front of a monochrome mural in Walthamstow’s Wood Street caught the eye of judge David Bailey.

The framed work of Ms Springer and 11 other entrants were put on display this week at Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone.

An awards ceremony attended by the Leader of Waltham Forest Cllr Clare Coghill was held to celebrate the centenary of the hospital’s founding.

Eric King and Robin Ek were jointly awarded second place by the Mr Bailey and Waltham Forest based photographer Jimmy Lee.

While Ms Springer was given return flights to Madeira, the runners up were handed match tickets courtesy of competition sponsors Jet2.com and Leyton Orient FC.

Alastair Finney, the hospital’s director of redevelopment said: “Whipps Cross is now brighter and more welcoming thanks to the twelve photographs taking pride of place across the hospital.

“I am delighted and astounded by the quality of the images which demonstrates the wealth of local talent.

“It was wonderful to have Cllr Coghill and the photographers join us as we marked the centenary of the naming of Whipps Cross and celebrated one hundred years of serving the local community.”

More than 3,700 people have pledged their support for the Waltham Forest Council’s Love Whipps Cross campaign to redevelop the hospital and transform it into a world-class health and wellbeing campus.

Cllr Coghill said: “This competition is a wonderful way to mark the centenary of the hospital by brightening up the walls with some striking images of our diverse borough.

“Whipps Cross Hospital is such a key institution and all our entries showed how much it means to local people.

“The Whipps Cross buildings desperately need to be brought up to date and we have an amazing opportunity to plan the way local healthcare is provided to meet our growing and ageing population’s needs.”
