A group of fashion students have designed a range of tote bags bearing a map of iconic landmarks from Waltham Forest.
The teenagers studying at Waltham Forest College in Forest Road, Walthamstow worked on the project alongside council officials for the Shop Local campaign.
Thousands of bags which bear symbols of Walthamstow Stadium, Henry VIII’s hunting lodge in Chingford, a bread factory in Bakers Arms and Alfred Hitchcock have been produced to highlight the rich culture of the borough.
The youngsters are selling their creations at the pop-up Hoe Hoe Hoe Street Christmas Bazaar at Central Parade, Walthamstow which runs until Tuesday, December 19.
Fashion lecturer Elaine McGuigan said: “The student had meetings with council officers, did the research to find the manufacturer, did the negotiations to produce the bags and worked within budget.
“We wanted to give them a really good opportunity to collaborate in a creative way and gain experience of working at a senior level with clients.”
Waltham Forest Council will also pass on the bags to retailers who will give them to shoppers when they purchase items.
Rebecca Davey, Head of Business, Growth and Investment at the Council said: “We are delighted to have been able to collaborate with the college and give the students the opportunity to use their talents in a real life environment.
“The bags are the culmination of much hard work and I am sure they have gained valuable experience along the way.”
