A fundraising concert featuring world renowned classical musicians will be held in aid of a charity helping refugees.

All proceeds from A Child of Our Time at the Royal Festive Hall in Southbank Centre, Lambeth, will go to the Refugee Council.

Organiser Libby Papakyriacou of Walthamstow said she and her team are thrilled with the “fantastic” response from musicians who have offered to perform for free.

Ms Papakyriacou said more than £35,000 has been raised from ticket sales ahead of the concert on Monday, January 15, and “the sky’s the limit” in terms of what the total figure will be.

“We have got some world-class musicians who have donated their time for free,” she said.

“The response has been amazing and we have been overwhelmed.

“We picked the Refugee Council because they do incredible work with children and young people.

“They have a reception centre in Dover. We felt that the money we raise for them would make a significant difference.

“They are smaller than UNICEF and other organisations and we wanted to make a sizeable difference.”

The charity provides support to refugees and asylum seekers including unaccompanied minors who have recently entered the UK.

The concert will include performances by violinist Hilary Hahn, tenor Toby Spence and soprano Sophie Bevan and will start at 7.30pm.

A free pre-concert event run by London charity Play for Progress will be held at the same venue at 6.15pm.
