A mother who launched a business selling children’s bookcases after being unable to find a suitable one for her daughter will have her product on display in an open house in Soho.

Geraldine Grandidier set up Tidy Books in Hatherley Mews, Walthamstow, 13 years ago to enkindle in children a love of reading and enable them to explore books for themselves.

US-based interior design firm Houzz has taken over a five-story townhouse and created a family home complete with a kitchen, home office and a child’s bedroom, where workshops and talks will take place next week.

The entrepreneur who is mum to Adele, 18, and Emile, 13, hopes the exhibition will showcase her designs to retailers and families looking for something “on trend for 2018”.

The 49-year-old who is originally from France said: “It’s a big thing to have been picked. Our design was an absolute first and now it has become kind of a classic. It has changed the way kids’ books are presented in the home.

“A lot of homes nowadays are open plan and there will be a kids’ play area in the corner of the kitchen so the design has to be stylish for style-conscious parents.

“The bookcase is a practical idea and it has the alphabet on the front of it and people say there’s a touch of quirkiness and retro to it.

“I was originally a violin maker and we are used to making our own tools so when I couldn’t find the right products on the market I tended to make them myself. I think it was my practical side of things that contributed to me starting the business.”

The open house is free to attend and will have a pop-up bar offering complimentary coffee.

It will run from 11am till 6pm from Friday, January 26 to Wednesday 31 at 19 Greek Street, Soho.
