A FATHER, photographer and athlete who died “lived life on his own terms and died on his own terms”, according to his son.

Ken Bray leaves behind wife, Brenda, who he had been married to for 58 years, and children, Jonathan, Sorrell and Rowan.

The 88-year-old lived in Woodford Green.

Jonathan, who took over his father’s business Venture Studios, praised his father’s love for life.

He said: “He led an incredibly full life. Although he was ill he went peacefully. He lived life to the full right up to his death. He lived on his own terms and died on his own terms.

“I have always been in awe of him. When I took over the business from him 28 years ago, I felt they were big shoes to fill. He taught me everything I know about photography.

“He inspired passion in all his kids and passed on his creativity, sense of humour and zest for life. He was a loving, funny man and an extraordinary chap.”

Mr Bray was born in 1929 in Wanstead. He lived most of his life in Loughton and Woodford Green before spending his final years in Buckhurst Hill.

The late photographer set up his first commercial studio in 1955 in High Road, Woodford Green and stayed there until 1964 when he moved to South Woodford, where Venture Studios currently operates.

Mr Bray was also one of the first photographers to earn money by taking photos of investitures at Buckingham Palace.

He had many interests, including scuba diving and tennis. He loved mountain climbing and scaled The Alps.

A committed Christian, he attended services at the United Ecumenical Church at Bancroft’s, Woodford Green, where he also did readings.

Mr Bray was also passionate about athletics. He won the 3000 metre Essex steeplechase and photographed Roger Bannister as he finished running a mile under four minutes in 1954.

Mr Bannister loved the picture so much he signed a copy for Jonathan.

The late athlete was an active member of Woodford Green Athletic Club, did their photography, public relations and raised money for the clubhouse.

Mr Bray’s son said: “Everyone went to my dad for their wedding photos. It made me incredibly proud and we have tried to carry on that tradition.

“I joke that people know me as Ken Bray’s son because they don’t know my first name.”
