People in Waltham Forest have been asked to call an NHS helpline if they need urgent medical assistance during an “extremely busy time” for healthcare authorities.
Waltham Forest Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is advising anyone who feels unwell or needs immediate help for a family member to call NHS 111, before seeking other medical treatment.
The CCG says anyone calling the number can be connected to a nurse, emergency dentist, or GP, where face-to-face appointments can be arranged if required.
Members of the public however were warned to still call 999 or visit accident and emergency in the event of a potentially life-threatening problem.
Dr Ken Aswani, a local GP and clinical director for urgent care at Waltham Forest CCG said: “NHS 111 is much more than a helpline.
“The fully-trained team is available to provide advice and support 24/7, and can connect you to the right service for you.
“At an extremely busy time for the NHS, this means that you get the help you need, when you need it.
“It also ensures that our local NHS emergency teams can focus on those who are seriously ill or injured and who need their help the most.”
NHS 111 also provides advice and support for those struggling with mental health issues and can organise prescriptions for collection at multiple locations across the borough.
