A man has been left fighting for their lives after a crash at a notorious accident blackspot.

Emergency services were called to Crooked Mile in Waltham Abbey at around 11.45am on Thursday (January 25) after reports of a collision involving a van and a car.

Firefighters from Waltham Abbey and Loughton stations freed a man from one of the vehicles by around 12.30pm.

He was later airlifted to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel with injuries deemed to be life-threatening.

A second casualty was also taken by paramedics to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow for further treatment.

There have been at least ten serious crashes reported in Crooked Mile since 2011, as well as more than 30 minor incidents.

Two people were taken to hospital with serious injuries after a two-car collision near the junction with Laundry Lane in January 2017.

In July 2016, a 33-year-old man was killed in an early-morning crash on Crooked Mile between a Volkswagen Golf and a Mercedes.

In 2011, a 64-year-old pensioner from Waltham Abbey died after his car crashed into a wall on the road.

Waltham Abbey Town Council had called for traffic calming measures on the road a recently as last year.
